چکیده

Abstrac t -1 . Three fluorescing materials have been discovered in excreta from the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.), and found to increase in concentration as dietary nitrogen increases. 2. These compounds have been identified as kynurenic, xanthurenic and 8-hydroxyquinaldic acids. 3. Feeding cockroaches antibiotic eliminates 8-hydroxyquinaldic acid production, presumably by inhibiting gut microbial dehydroxylation of xanthurenic acid. 4. Excreta from wild-type and lavender-eye mutants contains aU three metabolites, while that from pearl-eye mutants contains none of them. 5. Xanthurenic and 8-hydroxquinaldic acids may contribute to cockroach gut tumor formation.

Serum levels and urinary excretion of amino acids in preadolescent girls on two levels of protein intake.

The effects of tryptophan loads in twenty-one alcoholic subjects were studied and the results correlated with plasma pyridoxal-5-phosphate concentrations. Pyridoxal-5-phosphate concentrations were found to be less than 40 per cent of normal in three and more than 40 per cent of normal in the remaining eighteen. However, metabolite excretion in nine of the latter was subnormal. Possible explanat...

Hormonal Control of Excretion in the American Cockroach I. Release of a Diuretic Hormone from the Terminal Abdominal Ganglion

Recent investigations on the physiology of excretion in Rhodnius prolixus indicate that a diuretic hormone is released from the fused mesothoracic ganglion (Maddrell, 1962,1963,1964 a, b). The hormone can be extracted from the posterior neurosecretory cells of the ganglion and it promotes an increased rate of diuresis by the Malpighian tubules. In the American cockroach only an 'antidiuretic pr...

The Effect of Vitamin Supplementation on the Urinary Excretion of Tryptophan Metabolites by Pregnant Women.

The first demonstration by Lepkovsky, Roboz and Haagen-Smit (1) of the occurrence of xanthurenic acid in urine of vitamin B6-deficient rats has since been extended and confirmed in a number of species (2-4) including man (5, 6), and the measurement of xanthurenic acid in urine following a loading dose of tryptophan has been proposed as an index of vitamin B6 nutrition (7). The role of this vita...

Increased urinary excretion of some of themetabolites of the tryptophan-niacin pathway, with or without prior tryp

The 24-hr urinary excretion of certain metabolites of tryptophan was measured in 22 patients with Hodgkin's disease and 18 patients with lymphosarcoma, following the P.O. administration of 2 g L-tryptophan. An assay of hepatic tryptophan pyrrolase activity was done on 15 patients with Hodgkin's disease and 15 patients with lymphosarcoma, and an assay of hepatic ky'hureninase was done on 11 and ...

Quinolinic acid excretion and metabolism in man.

In 1946, Rosen e2 al. (1) showed that administration of tryptophan to rats resulted in an additional excretion of nicotinic acid and Nl-methylnicotinamide (Nl-Me). Singal et al. (2) found, in addition to these, increased excretion of another metabolite which could be converted to nicotinic acid by autoclaving in 1 N sulfuric acid solution. Henderson isolated this metabolite from the urine of ra...
